NOSTER signs an Agreement with GKM at the University of Münster

Yesterday, at the Haus der Niederlande in Münster, NOSTER signed an agreement with the Centrum für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Mittelmeerraums (GKM). The agreement aims to foster cooperation between German and Dutch ReMA students, PhD candidates, and senior scholars.

This year, NOSTER’s annual Spring Conference (15–17 April 2026) is organised in Münster, bringing together 45 participants (ReMA students and PhD candidates) from Dutch universities as well as the University of Münster. During the opening session at the historic Haus der Niederlande, the agreement was formally signed by NOSTER academic director Dr Matthijs den Dulk and GKM Sprecher Professor Dr Lutz Doering. The agreement facilitates participation by ReMA students and PhD candidates from both the Netherlands and Münster in courses offered by NOSTER and GKM respectively, thereby strengthening academic exchange and collaboration.

With its two established theological faculties (Catholic and Protestant) and the Centre of Islamic Theology en route to become a third faculty of theology, and with its strong profile in theology, religious studies, and Islamic studies, the University of Münster is one of the leading German institutions in close proximity to the Netherlands. Its Centrum für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Mittelmeerraums (GKM) brings together scholars working on the historical and cultural dynamics of the eastern Mediterranean region, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research. Through conferences, teaching programmes, and joint research initiatives, the GKM provides an important platform for international scholarly exchange.

In the early years of NOSTER’s history (1998–2003), the University of Münster was already one of three international partner institutions involved in joint research projects. This newly signed agreement thus not only marks a step forward in current collaboration, but also renews and builds upon longstanding academic ties between Münster and NOSTER.
