Kick-Off on Religion and Nationalism

On Friday 7 October, NOSTER organizes its annual Kick-Off in Nijmegen. The full programme is for NOSTER ReMA students and PhD candidates, but senior members of NOSTER are invited to the morning plenary session (10:00-12:30) on “Religion and Nationalism.”

Religion often plays a major role in different types of nationalism. At the Kick-Off, we will explore different types of religious nationalism – in past and present, in different national contexts and with a focus on different religions. How are religion and nationalism intertwined? Is ‘religious nationalism’ a useful or apt descriptor for the phenomena we study? And is (religious) nationalism necessarily problematic, as is often assumed? Such questions will be addressed by and discussed with Professor dr. Alfons Brüning (RU/PThU), dr. Brenda Bartelink (RUG) and dr. Lucien van Liere (UU).

Senior members of NOSTER don’t need to register, but a short message at noster@ru.nl is appreciated. ReMA students and PhD candidates need to register through Moodle.
