NOSTER Spring Conference 2018

1 - 2 EC 17 Apr 2018

16 – 17 April 2018, Driebergen-Rijsenburg

Course description: The NOSTER PhD Spring Conference is the climax of the NOSTER academic year. For two days all NOSTER junior members are invited to meet up, present their research, discuss urgent matters in the field and follow workshops.

During the first day of the conference, all junior members are invited to present their research. Recently started junior members can present the outline of their research project, while more advanced candidates present a chapter of their thesis and will receive feedback from senior scholars in the field. During the second day of the conference, urgent matters from the field will be discussed and there will be workshops on more practical tools for your research. During the conference, there will be plenty of time to get to know your peers informally.

Research presentations: Every junior researcher is invited to present his/her research project during the Spring Conference. There are three types of research presentations;

  1. Presentations of recently started research consist of a short presentation on the design of your project (15 min. presentation, 15 min. questions and discussion).
  2. Presentations of intermediate research consist of a short presentation on a specific (methodological or theoretical) issue of your project (15 min. presentation, 15 min. questions and discussion).
  3. Presentations of advanced research consist of a presentation (20 minutes) of an article or chapter from your thesis (max. 20 pages) that is distributed in advance to the participants of the conference. A senior scholar will provide a response (10-20 minutes) and there will be time for questions and discussion (20-30 minutes).

Workshops: The workshops for this year’s conference:

  1. How to manage your supervisor? (ENG)
    The power relation between PhD candidate and supervisor is a peculiar one; on the one hand PhD candidates are independent scholars, but on the other hand, they are (at least to a certain extent) dependent on their supervisors. In this workshop, we will discuss how you as a PhD candidate can contribute to this relation in a positive way while at the same time respecting your personal and professional boundaries.
  2. Academic profiling (ENG)
    In this workshop, we will explore the use of online platforms and tools to share your research output with the academic world. What are the benefits and downsides of each or all? During the workshop you will receive information about the main platforms (Academia, ResearchGate and Mendeley) and other tools; learn about and discuss some moral questions about the corporations behind these platforms; receive feedback on your profile resp. give feedback to those of others; create or improve your profile(s).
