Keynote lecture: Professor dr. Sophie van Bijsterveld (RU) – “Tocqueville, religion, and democracy”
Professor dr. Sophie van Bijsterveld (RU), expert in the field of religion, politics and law, will provide a keynote lecture on Friday morning. She will reflect on the role of religion in democracy, referring to the work of  Alexis de Tocqueville. Her research project about this 19th century French philosopher is an excellent example of how to integrate scholarly work into the public debate. Van Bijsterveld will speak about Tocqueville’s legacy and the lessons we can learn from him today, and about valorisation of research on religion in general. An introductory text on the life and work of Alexis de Tocqueville will be provided. Participants are invited to explore the project’s website (especially the blogs), which is only available in Dutch (but Google translate may be of service).
